What to See in Meghalaya
Shillong - Scotland of the East
Shillong is one of the most charming cities in Northeast India. At around 1,500 metres above sea level, the climate is cool and pleasant year-round. The city has a distinctive personality - part hill-station calm, part youthful energy, with a strong music culture that has earned it the nickname 'Rock Capital of India'. Don't miss Ward's Lake, Shillong Peak, Police Bazaar, and the beautiful Don Bosco Museum.
Cherrapunji - Land of Waterfalls
Cherrapunji (also known as Sohra) was long the wettest place on Earth. Even in the dry winter months, the landscape is dramatic — deep canyons, endless green plateaus, and some of the most spectacular waterfalls you will ever see. Nohkalikai Falls, the tallest plunge waterfall in India, is simply jaw-dropping. The Mawsmai Cave is a great experience for those comfortable with tight spaces.
Living Root Bridges of Nongriat
This is Meghalaya's most iconic experience. The Khasi people of this region have, over hundreds of years, trained the roots of rubber trees to grow across streams and ravines — creating natural living bridges that are stronger and more resilient than any man-made structure. The trek to the double-decker living root bridge at Nongriat is about 3,500 steps down (and back up), but it is one of the most rewarding hikes in all of Northeast India.
Dawki - The Crystal Clear River
The Umngot River at Dawki, on the India-Bangladesh border, is famous for its impossibly transparent water. Boats appear to float in mid-air, the sandy riverbed clearly visible beneath. This is one of Meghalaya's most photographed spots, and rightfully so.
Mawlynnong - Asia's Cleanest Village
This small village near Dawki has won awards for being Asia's cleanest village - and living up to the title, it is impeccably maintained. The community-driven approach to cleanliness and the bamboo walkways through the village make it a delightful stop.
The best time for a shillong tour package or cherrapunji tour package is October to April, when the monsoon has passed and the skies are clear. Cherrapunji gets extraordinary rainfall from June to September — the waterfalls are at their most dramatic, but roads can be challenging. Shillong is pleasant year-round due to its elevation.

The trek to the double-decker root bridge involves approximately 3,500 steps down (and back up). It takes about 4–5 hours round trip and is moderately challenging. We recommend comfortable footwear and a good level of fitness. We can also arrange guides for the trek.
4 to 5 days is ideal for covering Shillong, Cherrapunji, the root bridges, Dawki, and Mawlynnong. Add 2 more days if you want to explore the Jaintia Hills or Kaziranga.
Meghalaya is a safe and welcoming destination. The local Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo communities are known for their warmth. Shillong in particular has a very modern, cosmopolitan feel.
